Towns in Fuerteventura – 10 amazing things to do in Fuerteventura!

Fuerteventura is an island that surprises. Despite extremely dry landscape, it comes with some of the best beaches of the Canary Islands – you really find EVERYTHING your heart desires here. Picturesque white beaches, natural pools directly in the cliffs of the rough coast, black beaches, but also desert and volcanic landscapes. I have compiled the most beautiful places on the island in my personal list of the 10 most beautiful places & towns in Fuerteventura, so you can explore this incredibly great and diverse island by yourself.

First of all, I recommend renting a car, because the most beautiful places on Fuerteventura are often hidden. It’s really easy to drive on the Canary Island and you’ll reach areas that are off the typical tourist paths. And even to the most remote sights of Fuerteventura we managed to drive with our small 2 seater. So it’s not necessary to rent an off-road car to get to the best towns in Fuerteventura. Also you’ll find the best photo spots by strolling around the island by car.

1. Corralejo Town & Beach

In the north of the island you find the beach of Corralejo. It stretches for miles along the coast and is for me one of the most beautiful places on Fuerteventura. You can either go there by car or choose the city bus that drops you off near the Riu Hotel. Since there are only two hotels nearby, the wide sandy beach is almost never crowded and you have enough space to enjoy the day here.

The water is crystal clear and super refreshing – but bring an umbrella, because there is almost no shade here! As one of the Instagram photo spots on Fuerteventura, I’m especially fond of the yellow lifeguard houses, but if you want to take photos here, you have to be here early, otherwise you disturb the lifeguards in their operation. From the beach you can also walk into the dunes of Corralejo, one of the sights of Fuerteventura, which I present you in the next paragraph. The evening you should spend at one of the great restaurants in Cofete itself. The city has its own charm and is one of the most famous towns in Fuerteventura.

2. Dunes of Corralejo

The dunes of Corralejo are definitely one of the top Instagram photo spots on Fuerteventura. Gentle sand masses lay around the white sandy beach, which invites both to linger, as well as to surf. The best way to get to the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo is by car, but the city bus also goes to this station and stops near Playa de Corralejo, so you only have to walk a short distance to reach the dunes.

There is plenty of free parking along the road. For exploring this great sight on Fuerteventura and relaxing on the beach I recommend to plan half a day, so you can enjoy the time here. It’s best to let the evening end here, because walking through the dunes of Corralejo at sunset is a truly indescribable feeling. This wonderful piece of earth deserves a place on the list of the most beautiful places in Fuerteventura.

 3. Town of Villaverde – Fuerteventura’s windmills

The first windmill was built in the 17th century on Fuerteventura and even today you can find historic mills all around the island. Many of them have been lovingly restored and therefore make a wonderful photo motif.

White windmills against a blue sky – A dream of an Instagram photo spot here on Fuerteventura. The best opportunity for this can be found in town of Villaverde. These mills are standing free and aren’t surrounded by other buildings like many other windmills on Fuerteventura. In addition, the two mills here are located on a chain of hills, so you can also enjoy a great view, which makes the mills not only one of the most beautiful places on Fuerteventura, but also an impressive viewpoint. Villaverde itself is one of the towns in Fuerteventura that doesn’t offer much else, but the windmills themselves are really impressive.

4. Popcorn Beach

Popcorn Beach is of course not really called Popcorn Beach. If you want to navigate with Google Maps then Playa del Bajo de la Burra is the right address. The road is not in the best condition, so you should drive carefully or walk the last part. Among the most beautiful places on Fuerteventura, this place ranks for me rather on the back ranks – probably because I had expected a little more by all the photos on Instagram, but a visit is worth it if you are looking for a special photo spot on Fuerteventura.

The washed up coral pieces actually look like popcorn and you really don’t get to see that everywhere. For a small stop, the beach is really a great address – but not for much more. Especially because there is not so much to explore in the vicinity. The towns in fuerteventura that would be near by are Corralejo or Majanicho. When you visit this Majanicho, you can experience what a small fishing village really means.

Far from the big crowds, it stands out for one thing: tranquility.

5. Town of Betancuria

Betancuria – one of the most perfect towns in Fuerteventura. As you drive through the center of the island, Betancuria is the perfect place for a lunch stop. Nestled in a valley, you’ll see whitewashed buildings, palm trees, carved wooden balconies and beautiful colorful flowers. For me, the church in the center of Betancuria is one of the most beautiful places on Fuerteventua.

In addition, the small community is a good starting point to stroll from the Parque Rural de Betancuria along the posted hiking trails. Here you will most likely find other beautiful Instagram photo spots, such as the ruins of the former monastery church Iglesia Convento San Buenaventura.

6. Streets of Fuerteventura

Yes, it sounds strange, but the roads on Fuerteventura are really photogenic. The island is easy to explore by car and again and again you pass places or just roads and think to yourself: “Yes, it’s really beautiful here!”

Basically, you can stop anywhere and have found a great photo spot for your vacation album. Especially if you like winding, lonely roads, you are exactly right on Fuerteventura! Of course, I would like to point out here that when photographing along or even on roads, the highest caution is required and you must always keep an eye on the traffic. But we could also benefit from the fact that we explored the most beautiful places on Fuerteventura during off-season and therefore really little was going on! For driving from town to town in Fuerteventura, this was a real benefit.

7. Cofete

Cofete is a secluded village located on the northwest coast of the Jandía peninsula. It is mostly known for it’s beach, which is one of the beaches located directly in the Jandia National Park. The park itself is already one of the most breathtaking sights on Fuerteventura, but Cofete was a real highlight for me. The roads here are unpaved, but you don’t necessarily need a car capable of off-roading, because the roads are not really steep. Driving carefully, however, is an absolute must. If you don’t dare to explore one of the most beautiful places on Fuerteventura on your own, you can also easily book quad tours in the park.

Unfortunately we tried 2 times to get here and although the day was super clear, Cofete was in the clouds, because the weather here is a bit odd. Even when the sun is shining, it can unfortunately look quite different behind the mountains. So we couldn’t take full advantage of the potential this beautiful photo spot. Nevertheless, this beach has made it to the list of the most beautiful places on Fuerteventura.

The beach itself is shielded by the mountains of Jandia and stretches for miles along the coast of Fuerteventura. The view is truly breathtaking, even in bad weather. However, there is always a strong breeze, the waves are high and if you want to swim here, you should be careful of the currents. On the other hand, the beach seems almost untouched – almost as if you were once stranded here with a ship. If you are ready for a short walk, you will also find the Roque del Moro shortly before Cofete beach – a stone formation that clearly belongs on the list of the most beautiful places on Fuerteventura!

8. Morro Jable

Before you plan your stop to the national park, you can make a small detour to Morro Jable, because you pass here anyway. In fact, the place is quite touristy and is pretty much mentioned in every travel guide as one of the attractions on Fuerteventura. There are many restaurants and a few shopping facilities – actually not really my taste. Why the place is still on the list of the most beautiful towns in Fuerteventura is the great view of the expansive sandy beach. In addition, many tours start from here – on land or water.

By the way, since Morro Jable is located on the edge of a mountain range that keeps cold winds and clouds away from the place, Morro Jable is the area with the sunniest and warmest temperatures in all of Fuerteventura.

9. Caleta de Fuste

One of the most beautiful photo spots on Fuerteventura is this natural rock pool near Caleta de Fuste. The water is crystal clear and the pool is lined with dark volcanic columns. It’s a great place to spend a few hours relaxing and taking photos. In fact, it’s one of the top Instagram spots – not only is it one of the most successful of my pictures on Instagram, even on TikTok this beautiful place gave me a viral video.

But beware, you should find out in advance how the tide behaves (here) on the island, because the pool is only visible at low tide and also only accessible by climbing. To find it, search Google Maps first for Caleta de Fuste and zoom in – then it is listed as “natural pool” directly.

After a day at the pool and the beginning of the high tide you can spend a relaxing evening in Caleta de Fuste. Again, this place is one of the more touristy towns in Fuerteventura, but there are some great restaurants and bars for spendings a nice time here.

10. Ajuy

Ajuy is one of the prettiest fishing towns in Fuerteventura and is located directly on a black sand beach. The beach alone is already a really great photo opportunity, but caution is advised here, because the dark sand is really hot in bright sunshine – walking barefoot quickly becomes uncomfortable.

If you follow the path to the right, you will reach the Ajuy Caves – one of the oldest stone formations of the Canary Islands, which you can also enter via a small hiking trail that leads along the rugged coast. You can leave the car at the parking lot above the town, so you can walk through the village, across the beach to the caves and have not missed any of the sights in Ajuy.
